Social media automation tools, sorted by which job they take over
Updated
A social media automation tool takes a repeated task off your hands, most often publishing posts at a set time. The best one for you depends on which task eats your week. Schedulers like Buffer, Later and Hootsuite automate posting. Meta Business Suite automates posting and message replies on Facebook and Instagram for free. Zapier connects apps so one event triggers another. Vidpop automates the step before all of them: it plans, designs and writes the posts, then publishes them. This page sorts six tools by the job each one takes over, and says which parts of social media should stay with you.
The short answer
- To automate making the posts: Vidpop. Autopilot plans and designs three carousels a week with captions, and Post for Me publishes them to Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. iPhone app.
- To automate posting for free: Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram, or Buffer's free plan for up to three channels.
- To automate posting across many networks: Buffer (12 networks) or Later (auto-publishes to six). You bring the finished posts.
- For a team with an inbox and approvals: Hootsuite, from $99 per user a month billed annually.
- To connect social media to other apps: Zapier. For example, publish a photo to Instagram when a new row is added to a spreadsheet.
What you can automate, and what you shouldn't
Social media has five repeated jobs. Each has a tool that can take it over. Some parts still need a person.
| Job | Can it be automated? | Tools that do it |
|---|---|---|
| Deciding what to post | Yes, if the tool knows your business | Vidpop Autopilot; idea helpers in Buffer, Later and Hootsuite |
| Making the image or carousel | Yes | Vidpop; Hootsuite's AI images; Canva templates you fill in |
| Writing the caption | Yes, but read it before it posts | Vidpop; Buffer AI Assistant; Later Caption Writer; Hootsuite Wisdom |
| Publishing at a set time | Yes, this is the easy part | All six tools on this page |
| Replying to messages | Partly: first replies and FAQs | Meta Business Suite instant replies, away messages and keyword replies; Hootsuite inbox |
| Replying to comments, handling complaints | No. Keep this human | Do it yourself in the app |
- Keep a check step. An automated post about a closed shop or a sold-out product is worse than no post. Use approval for anything time-sensitive.
- Mind the account rules. Every tool here needs an Instagram Business or Creator account; Zapier's Instagram publishing needs a Business account. Facebook needs a Page.

How Vidpop automates the week, and its limits
Most automation tools start when the post already exists. Vidpop starts earlier. You give it your website or App Store page, or answer six short questions and add a few photos. Autopilot then plans three carousels a week, designs each one with 5 to 7 slides at 1080x1350, and writes the caption.
Post for Me publishes to Instagram, Facebook and a LinkedIn company Page you manage, right away or at the scheduled time. TikTok takes video only, so on the Pro plan your weekly UGC video ad can go there.
You choose how automatic it is. With "Ask me first" on, nothing goes out until you approve it. With it off, Autopilot posts on its own. You can edit, re-make or undo a post up to 15 minutes before it goes out, and your first week always waits for your approval.
What Vidpop does not automate: replies to messages and comments, reports across networks, and posting to X, Pinterest, Threads or YouTube. It is iPhone only (iOS 17 or later), with no web or Android version, and carousels are written in English for now.
The other five
Buffer is the simplest scheduler. It posts to 12 networks and charges per channel: $5 a month each on Essentials. Its free plan covers three channels with 10 scheduled posts each. The AI Assistant helps you brainstorm and rewrite.
Later has a drag-and-drop Visual Planner. Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly for one social set of 8 profiles and 30 posts per profile a month, with 5 AI credits. One credit gives three ideas or one caption.
Hootsuite is built for teams. It adds a shared inbox, social listening and analytics around publishing. Standard is $99 per user a month billed annually for up to 10 accounts, and content approvals start on Advanced at $399.
Meta Business Suite is Meta's free tool. It schedules posts, stories and reels to Facebook and Instagram. Its inbox can send instant replies, away messages and replies to keywords you choose.
Zapier is not a social tool. It links apps with rules called Zaps: when something happens in one app, it does something in another. Its Instagram for Business actions can publish photos, carousels and Reels, and only work with a Business account.
Free social media scheduling tools
If you already make your own posts and only need them to go out on time, you may not need to pay.
- Meta Business Suite: free, and schedules posts, stories and reels to Facebook and Instagram.
- Buffer Free: up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel.
- Zapier Free: 100 tasks a month, with one trigger and one action per Zap.
- Native schedulers: Instagram and LinkedIn let you schedule posts inside their own apps. See how to schedule Instagram posts and how to schedule LinkedIn posts.
- What free tools leave to you: the topic, the design and the caption. That is the part Vidpop automates, with a 3-day free trial on Starter.
How to choose an automation tool
- 01Write down the task that takes you the longest each week. Pick the tool that takes over that task.
- 02If posting on time is the problem, start with a free scheduler.
- 03If knowing what to post and making it is the problem, pick a tool that makes the posts, like Vidpop.
- 04If you have a team answering messages, look at a suite with a shared inbox, like Hootsuite.
- 05Check that the tool reaches your networks and that your accounts meet the rules: Instagram Business or Creator, a Facebook Page.
- 06Keep approval on for the first week, then decide how much to let run on its own.
Frequently asked questions
- What is social media automation?
- Using software to do repeated social media tasks for you. The most common is publishing posts at a set time. Some tools also plan and design posts, write captions, or send first replies to messages.
- What is the best free social media automation tool?
- For Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite is free and schedules posts, stories and reels. For more networks, Buffer's free plan covers three channels with 10 scheduled posts each. Both post what you make yourself.
- Can AI make and post social media content automatically?
- Yes. Vidpop's Autopilot plans three carousels a week for your business, designs them, writes the captions and posts them to Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. You can approve each one first with "Ask me first".
- What parts of social media should not be automated?
- Replies to real comments and complaints, and anything that depends on today's news. Automated first replies to messages are fine, but a person should handle the conversation after that.
- Is automating Instagram posts against the rules?
- Instagram lets outside tools publish to professional accounts through its official sign-in, which is why tools need a Business or Creator account. Vidpop connects through a secure sign-in and never sees your password.
- Do I need Zapier to automate social media?
- Usually not. A scheduler or Vidpop covers posting. Zapier helps when you want another app to trigger a post, such as a new product in your store or a new row in a spreadsheet.
- How much does Vidpop cost?
- Starter is $8.99 a week or $29.99 a month with a 3-day free trial. Pro is $16.99 a week or $59.99 a month and adds a weekly UGC video ad. These are US App Store prices and can differ by country.
