The best social media app for a small business run by one person

Updated

If you run a small business, social media is probably the job you do last, late at night, on your phone. You don't need a tool built for a marketing team with ten client accounts. You need something that keeps your Instagram and Facebook active while you run the business. This page compares five apps small businesses actually use and ranks them on one thing: how many hours a week they give back to an owner who does it all alone.

The short answer

  • 1. Vidpop. Does the whole weekly job from your iPhone. It learns your business, plans and designs three carousels a week, writes the captions and posts them to Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. You can approve each post first or let it run.
  • 2. Meta Business Suite. Free, made by Meta, for scheduling posts, stories and reels to Facebook and Instagram and answering messages in one inbox. You make the posts yourself.
  • 3. Canva. The design tool most owners already know, with a free plan and more than 1.6 million templates. You write and design each post, and scheduling is on the paid plans.
  • 4. Buffer. A simple scheduler with a free plan for three channels and an AI Assistant for writing. You bring the images.
  • 5. Later. A scheduler with a visual planner and a link-in-bio page, starting at $18.75 a month billed yearly. You bring the images.

Where a small business actually loses time

Posting itself takes a minute. The time goes into the parts before it: deciding what to talk about, finding or making an image that looks professional, and writing a caption that sounds like you. Then doing it again three days later.

So the question to ask of any app is simple. Which of those steps does it take away? A free scheduler that leaves you designing every post still costs you your evenings. An app that makes the posts saves the hours that matter.

  • Ideas: what to post this week, based on what you sell.
  • Design: posts that look consistent without a designer.
  • Captions: words that fit the post and your business.
  • Posting: on time, on the right accounts, even when you are busy.

Why Vidpop suits a one-person business

Vidpop was built for the owner who is also the marketing department. Setup takes one of three routes: your website, your App Store page, or six short questions plus a few photos. From that, Vidpop works out what you sell and who it is for.

Every week, Autopilot plans three carousels, designs them at 1080x1350 with 5 to 7 slides each, writes the captions and posts them to Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn on schedule. It rotates between eight formats, such as tips, myth vs fact, steps, FAQ and before-and-after, so your feed stays varied.

You can be as hands-on as you like. Turn on "Ask me first" to approve each post, or leave it off. Keep or pass on post ideas, ask for more posts like one you liked, and leave a note to steer next week. Need a post about today's offer? Create with AI makes a caption, image post or carousel from a short description, and Post for Me can send it right away.

Starter costs $8.99 a week or $29.99 a month on the US App Store, with a 3-day free trial. Pro, at $16.99 a week or $59.99 a month, adds a weekly UGC video ad with an AI presenter.

The other four

Meta Business Suite is free and covers Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp. Its help center describes a content calendar, scheduled posts, stories and reels, insights, and one inbox for messages and comments. It is a good companion to any app on this list for answering customers.

Canva gives you the most design choice. Its free plan includes 1.6 million or more templates and 4.7 million or more stock items. Canva's pricing page lists scheduling social content as unavailable on the free plan.

Buffer and Later are schedulers. Buffer's free plan covers three channels with 10 scheduled posts each; paid plans are priced per channel. Later's Starter includes one social set of 8 profiles, 30 posts per profile a month and a link-in-bio page.

A weekly routine that takes minutes

  1. 01Monday: open Vidpop and look through the three carousels planned for the week.
  2. 02Edit any caption that needs a local detail, like an opening time or a price.
  3. 03If one idea doesn't fit, re-make it or pass on it.
  4. 04Approve the week, or let Autopilot post on its own.
  5. 05When something happens mid-week, like a new product or a holiday offer, make a post with Create with AI.
  6. 06Answer comments and messages as they come in. That part is still yours, and it is the part customers remember.
