Synthesia alternative for people making ads, not courses
Updated
Almost nobody has a bad word for Synthesia, and the reasons are legitimate: 240+ AI avatars, 160+ languages, SCORM export straight into a learning management system, SSO, and use inside 90% of the Fortune 100. What Synthesia is not is an ad maker — it is an enterprise platform for business communications and training, it runs in a browser only, and its own help center says the video editor is not available on mobile. It is a different category from Vidpop, and most people who search this comparison are in the middle of discovering they picked the wrong category rather than the wrong vendor.
What is Synthesia?
Synthesia is an enterprise video platform for business communications: learning and development, sales enablement, HR, compliance and technical training. You write or paste a script, choose an avatar, and it produces a presenter-led video, usually destined for an internal audience rather than a paid media placement.
Published pricing, August 2026, with the company advertising prices cut by 38%: Free (Basic) at $0 gives 10 video minutes a month, 1,200 credits, 9 stock avatars and 3 personal avatars, with no credit card required — but downloads and logo removal need a paid plan. Starter is $29/month, or $18/month billed yearly, for 10 minutes a month (120 a year on annual), 125+ stock avatars, downloads, AI dubbing, logo removal, and 1 editor plus 3 guests. Creator is $89/month, or $64/month billed yearly, for 30 minutes a month (360 a year), 180+ stock avatars, 5 personal avatars, API access, interactive videos, and 1 editor plus 5 guests. Enterprise is custom, with unlimited minutes, 240+ stock avatars, unlimited personal avatars, SAML/SSO, SCORM and a dedicated CSM.
Platforms are the part people get wrong. Synthesia runs in a web browser only. There is no native iOS or Android app, and per their own help center the video editor is not available on mobile — a mobile browser covers browsing, watching, dubbing and personal-avatar creation, on self-serve accounts only. One warning worth repeating: ignore any App Store app called Synthesia. None of them are this company's. One of them is a piano-learning game, and the rest are unaffiliated third parties, so do not judge Synthesia by their ratings or their reviews.
You may be in the wrong category, not at the wrong vendor
There is a specific moment that sends people to this page. You needed a short vertical ad for Instagram or TikTok. You searched for AI video, found the most credible-looking platform on the internet, signed up, and then spent an hour working out where the 9:16 setting is and why everything is shaped like a webinar.
That is not a Synthesia failure — it is doing exactly what it was built for. Their avatars page makes no mention of 9:16 vertical output, which is an absence of published information rather than proof it cannot do it, but the product surface, the pricing measured in video minutes and the SCORM export all tell you who it is for: a learning-and-development team producing a compliance module, not one person producing an ad on a Tuesday.
Vidpop is the opposite shape in every dimension. It does one thing: a 720 × 1280, 9:16, 30 fps vertical ad of about 25 to 35 seconds, with an AI presenter, an 11-line script, a voiceover, captions burned in from a transcript of that voiceover, music from a 15-track licensed library and a branded end card. It runs only on an iPhone with iOS 17 or later — no web app, no iPad app, no Android app, no team seats, no SSO, no LMS anything. Whether that reads as a downgrade or a relief tells you which category you belong in.
Why people look for a Synthesia alternative
- No native app on any phone. Synthesia is browser-only, and per their own help center the video editor is not available on mobile — mobile browsers get browsing, watching, dubbing and personal-avatar creation, on self-serve accounts only.
- Minutes are the real constraint, not videos. Starter gives 10 video minutes a month at $29/month, or $18/month billed yearly. Creator gives 30 minutes a month at $89/month, or $64/month billed yearly. If you iterate on ad creative, minutes evaporate on takes you throw away.
- The free plan cannot download. Basic includes 10 video minutes a month and 1,200 credits with no credit card, but downloads and logo removal both require a paid plan, so the free tier is for evaluating rather than shipping.
- Vertical output is not published. Their avatars page does not mention 9:16 output at all. That is not the same as saying it is impossible — but if vertical is the format your ad has to be in, you should not have to reverse-engineer whether the tool supports it.
- Arabic support is thinly documented. Synthesia publishes an English-to-Arabic video translator page claiming Arabic audio, voice cloning, lip-sync and auto-generated Arabic and English subtitles. But Arabic is not enumerated by name on their main languages page, no number of Arabic voices or dialects is published, and there is no published statement about right-to-left or Arabic script rendering.
- API access starts at Creator, $89/month (or $64/month billed yearly), which is a steep entry point if the API is the only reason you are there.
Vidpop vs Synthesia
Line the two up and the table is lopsided in Synthesia's favor on every row a company would care about, and lopsided the other way on the one row an individual cares about: can you make the thing on your phone, in the shape the placement needs, without asking anyone.
The minutes model is the most underrated difference. Synthesia's Starter plan is 10 video minutes a month. A 30-second ad is half a minute, which sounds generous until you remember that ad creative is iterative — you make six versions, hate four, and you have spent a third of the month. Vidpop's constraint is different in kind: a subscription is required to render, credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over, and if a render fails the credits are refunded automatically.
On Arabic, the fair reading is that Synthesia's support exists but is under-documented. They publish a translator product with Arabic audio, voice cloning, lip-sync and subtitles, so it would be wrong to say they do not do Arabic. What is missing is any published statement about how Arabic script is shaped and laid out on screen. Vidpop's claim is deliberately narrow: captions render through a real text engine with correct letter joining and right-to-left layout, in Noto Sans Arabic Black, picked because it was the only font on hand with full Arabic presentation-form coverage after two others dropped glyphs.
It is also worth stating what Vidpop gives up to be this small. Every reel has an AI presenter and there is no presenter-free mode. There is no frame-level editing, no trimming, no adding scenes, no changing the aspect ratio, no custom avatar and no music upload beyond the 15 bundled tracks. The app's own interface is in English even when the reel is Arabic. And Vidpop has zero App Store ratings against Synthesia's claimed 4.7 out of 5 from over 2,000 five-star reviews.

- A phone-only workflow, from App Store search through screen recording to export, with no desktop step anywhere.
- Vertical by default, because 9:16 is the only shape Vidpop makes.
- Ad structure baked in — 3 hook lines, 5 demo lines, 3 call-to-action lines, and a branded end card with your real App Store icon.
- Free, unlimited edit chat. Talking to the editor costs nothing; only applying a change costs anything, and applying one creates a new version while keeping the original reel.
- A finished ad rather than a clip — script, presenter, voiceover, captions, music and end card arrive assembled, with nothing left to edit together.
Where Synthesia is stronger
- Enterprise trust a small app cannot claim. 90% of the Fortune 100, 50,000+ teams, and a procurement-friendly vendor posture. If your video has to pass a security review or a vendor questionnaire, stay with Synthesia — Vidpop has none of that apparatus and is not trying to build it.
- Training workflows end to end. SCORM export into an LMS, SSO, live collaboration, interactive videos and branded video pages. Anyone whose videos need to land inside a learning platform and report completion should not be looking at an ad tool at all.
- The deepest avatar library here, plus personal avatars. 240+ stock avatars, 3 personal avatars on the free plan, 5 on Creator and unlimited on Enterprise. If you need a specific person's likeness presenting, or dozens of faces across a course library, stay with Synthesia — Vidpop offers only stock presenters and no custom avatars at all.
- A genuinely usable free tier. 10 video minutes a month, 1,200 credits and no credit card is a real trial, even with downloads gated behind a paid plan. Vidpop requires a subscription before it will render anything, so anyone who wants to test before paying should start at Synthesia.
- Multi-seat collaboration and recent price cuts. 1 editor plus 3 guests on Starter, 1 plus 5 on Creator, with prices advertised as cut by 38%. Any team where more than one person touches a video should stay — Vidpop is a single-user app on a single phone.
Who should switch
Choose Vidpop if the video you need is an ad: vertical, under 35 seconds, hook first, call to action at the end, made by one person who also happens to be the founder, the marketer and the support inbox. It fits when you want the finished MP4 in about nine minutes without opening a laptop, when the ad has to feature your app's real screens or your product's real photos, and especially when it has to be in Arabic with the on-screen text actually joined up correctly. The whole point of Vidpop is that the format decisions are already made.
Stick with Synthesia if you are producing training, onboarding, compliance or sales-enablement video, if anything needs to go into an LMS via SCORM, if you need SSO or multiple seats, if you want a specific person's personal avatar, or if you need long-form video measured in minutes rather than seconds. Stay too if you want to try before you pay, or if your organization needs a vendor with references at Fortune 100 scale. Every one of those is a real reason and none of them is served better by a phone app with zero ratings.
These two products are not competing for the same person, and the giveaway is what each one measures. Synthesia sells you minutes, because a course is long. Vidpop sells you a shape, because an ad is short. If your unit of work is a module, you are shopping in the right place already.
Frequently asked questions
- Can Synthesia make Instagram or TikTok ads?
- Synthesia is built for business communications and training — learning and development, HR, compliance and sales enablement — rather than for paid social ads, and its avatars page does not mention 9:16 vertical output. Vidpop only makes vertical output: every reel is 720 × 1280, 9:16, about 25 to 35 seconds, with an AI presenter, captions and a branded end card.
- Is there a Synthesia mobile app?
- No. Synthesia runs in a web browser only, and its own help center says the video editor is not available on mobile — a mobile browser covers browsing, watching, dubbing and personal-avatar creation on self-serve accounts. Any App Store app named Synthesia belongs to an unrelated third party; one of them is a piano-learning game, so their ratings say nothing about this company.
- Is Synthesia free?
- Synthesia has a free Basic plan with 10 video minutes a month, 1,200 credits, 9 stock avatars and 3 personal avatars, and no credit card required — but downloads and logo removal require a paid plan, so you cannot ship from the free tier. Vidpop has no free rendering at all: a subscription is required before it will produce a reel.
- Which handles Arabic video better?
- Synthesia publishes an English-to-Arabic translator with Arabic audio, voice cloning, lip-sync and subtitles, but Arabic is not enumerated on their main languages page and they publish nothing about right-to-left or Arabic script rendering. Vidpop makes a narrower, checkable claim: it writes Modern Standard Arabic scripts, offers 7 regional Arabic voices across Saudi, Kuwaiti, Omani and Egyptian accents, and renders captions with correct letter joining and right-to-left layout.
- What can Synthesia do that Vidpop cannot?
- A great deal. Vidpop has no custom or personal avatars, no SSO, no SCORM export, no team seats, no web or desktop version, no free tier, no video longer than about 35 seconds, and no output above 720 × 1280 in 9:16. It also has zero App Store ratings, having been released on 11 June 2026. If any of those matter, Synthesia is the stronger choice.
- Do I need a computer to use Vidpop?
- No, and you cannot use one — Vidpop is an iPhone-only app requiring iOS 17 or later, with no iPad app, no Android app and no web version. The whole flow, from searching the App Store for your app to exporting the finished MP4 through the iOS share sheet, happens on the phone.
- Can Vidpop make training or explainer videos?
- Not really. Vidpop produces one thing: a vertical ad of about 25 to 35 seconds built from an 11-line script of 3 hook lines, 5 demo lines and 3 call-to-action lines, ending on a branded end card. There is no way to lengthen it, change its aspect ratio, add scenes or edit individual frames, so anything course-shaped belongs in a platform like Synthesia.
- Does Vidpop have a free plan?
- Vidpop is free to download but a subscription is required to render a reel. On the US App Store, checked 30 August 2026, the plans are Starter at $7.49 a week for 5 credits, Creator at $22.49 for 15 and Pro at $45 for 30, and prices vary by country. Playing voice previews and talking to the edit chat are free; only rendering and applying changes cost anything.
